ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE OF EU FISHING FLEETS

The report presents statistics on economic results for 2004 of 19 national fleets and 89 specific fleet segments, representing about 55-60% of the total production value of the European fishery sector. EU fishing fleets employed in 2004 about 185,000 people on board. The value of total production was estimated at 6.6 billion Euro.

There are significant differences in productivity among fleet segments, countries and regions. Fleet segments of EU-15 achieved an average value of landings per employed of some 56,000 Euro. In the new Members States average labour productivity amounted to approximately 15,000 Euro, while in the Nordic non-EU countries the fleets generated about 148,000 Euro per person. These difference can be partly explained by higher capital intensities - in the EU-15 there are 50 kW/man in the new Member States 33 kW/man, while the Nordic countries have 100 kW/man.
