The challenge of the study was how to integrate the recommendations from various disciplines regarding possible reductions of energy use into one coherent analysis, which could be clearly communicated to the owners of fishing vessels. Each technical adaptation of fishing gear, vessel or propulsion characteristics or fishing tactics does not only affect the costs of energy, but also revenues and possibly other costs.

The proposed technical adaptations were summarized in a ‘catalogue’, with the objective to provide a quick and easy overview. In order to analyse economic feasibility of these adaptations, Framian designed a mathematical model which translated fuel costs savings to the level of feasible investments in relation to likely affects on productivity.

The results of the study have been presented at international conferences in Vigo (Spain) and Seattle (USA).
